Smith’s works on paper explore sincerity, conviction, and materiality, drawing from images of the American Dust Bowl and her experiences of working with land and children. She purposefully confuses spatial elements with layers of translucent printing and opaque gouache. Through beauty, honesty and distance, the abstracted forms resonate as open-ended feelings, an ambiguous collision of what has happened and imaginations of a farming life. Potato Boys will also debut a broadside collaboration with poet Todd McCarty.
The first hour of the opening, children and the young-at-heart joined in an installation on the wall, prepared in keeping with the show's theme.
